Maximum residential fence heights for single-family or mixed residential use:

When 8 feet is allowed. The Unified Development Code permits taller side and rear fences in specific cases. A few of them:

• The ground floor of your home or your neighbor’s sits at least 4 feet above the shared lot line
• The fence runs along a side or rear line abutting an alley, railroad right of way, or a non-local street
• The lot abuts a multi-family, commercial, industrial, or park use
• The yard holds a swimming pool or hot tub, or abuts a property that does
• A slope lets the fence top stay level, so long as the tallest point stays under 8 feet

Anything over 8 feet needs a Texas licensed engineer to certify the foundation and wind load. Nothing over 12 feet is allowed under any condition.

Permits. You apply through the city’s BuildSA portal. A repair or replacement needs a permit once the work passes 25% of the existing fence length. Build first and you pay double permit fees, and you still have to meet the code.

Prohibited materials. The city bans barbed wire, razor wire, sheet metal, roll metal, corrugated metal, particle board, plastic sheeting, tarps, low grade plywood, plywood under 5/8 inch, and any cast-off or secondhand material.
